Filter out more than just coffee grounds
When it comes to coffee percolator filter paper, we mostly focus on whether it has good water filtration, quality, and whether it has peculiar smell, so as to ensure that we can make a good cup of coffee. Its biggest function is to prevent coffee grounds from entering our mouths.
In fact, coffee contains coffee oil, and the diterpenes compounds cafestol and kahweol in it will increase the concentration of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood.
Studies have shown that drinking 5 cups of coffee brewed in a French press pot every day, which contains about 10 to 13 mg of coffee oil, can increase blood cholesterol by 6 to 8% in 4 weeks.
Another study also pointed out that drinking 60 mg of coffee oil every day is enough to increase low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides in the body. If coffee beans contain 1% coffee oil, as long as you drink more than 6 grams of coffee, you will ingest more than 60 mg of coffee oil, which may be harmful to your health.
What to do? This involves filter paper.
The Harvard Health Letter published by Harvard University points out that filter paper can filter out most of the cafestol and kahweol.
Han Huaizong also pointed out that coffee brewed without filter paper, such as Nordic water-boiled coffee, French filter press, and Turkish pot, contains about 6 to 12 mg of cafestol and kahweol per cup, while coffee brewed with filter paper only contains about 0.2 to 0.6 mg. So if you want to reduce these things, just filter it with filter paper. For example, espresso machines, moka pots, siphon pots, French filter press pots, etc. can all be filtered with filter paper before drinking.
